‘Shouldn’t Even Be Playing This Season’ — NFL World Reacts to League Handing Lengthy Suspension for Falcons’ James Pearce Jr.

The Atlanta Falcons knew a suspension of some kind was coming after James Pearce Jr. was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in February. On Thursday, the NFL handed down the discipline, suspending the 22-year-old for the first eight games of the regular season.

His loss is a significant one for a Falcons team that ranked 19th in points allowed last season, where Pearce led the team with 10.5 sacks as a rookie. Pearce’s 79.9 PFN Impact Score ranked 26th among edge rushers, and it was just his first season.

Yet some argue that Pearce got away with a light sentence.

As PFN’s Jacob Infante pointed out, a Pearce suspension was expected from the moment his legal trouble became public. Yet, some expected a stiffer penalty.

“A suspension for James Pearce Jr. was always likely,” Infante wrote on X. “Honestly, think his punishment, given the circumstances, is a bit light, which is a win for the Falcons, I suppose.”

One commenter saw the news and took it as a sign that the Falcons will be bad, like really bad, in 2026. So bad that they’ll position themselves for a chance to land a quarterback high in the 2027 NFL Draft.

“We talk about how grim the Falcons QB situation is now, but they just might fall into a solution next April,” Nico ‘Elite Takes’ wrote on X.

That was a sentiment shared by Kevin Keenely, who believes the Falcons are now “coming for that No. 1 pick.”

Another pointed out just how bleak the Falcons’ pass-rush situation is, with both of their top two edge rushers (and both 2025 first-round picks) set to miss the start of the season. That could give Atlanta’s early opponents, like the Pittsburgh Steelers, an early advantage.

“Steelers won’t face Falcons’ top two pass rushers Jalon Walker (torn ACL) or James Pearce Jr. (suspended) in Week One,” Alex Kozora said.

Ben Houselog couldn’t believe that Pearce was getting just an eight-game suspension. He wrote on X, “Only 8?”

The Falcons recorded 57 sacks last season, good enough for the second-most in the NFL. Yet, now they’ve lost two of their top performers. Pearce had the most sacks on the team, and Walker, who had 5.5 sacks, ranked third.

One Falcons-related account couldn’t believe the team’s luck after such a “promising” season from the defense.

The ‘Rise Up Bijan’ account posted, “The Falcons after having their best and most promising pass rush in forever: Jalon Walker: tears ACL James Pearce Jr: suspended half a year.”

‘Panthers On Tap,’ which is a Carolina Panthers-related podcast, also reacted to Pearce’s suspension and said, “Good! Shouldn’t even be playing this season.”

Lastly, another felt that Pearce Jr.’s suspension was “expected and deserved” while still holding out hope that he “learned” from his mistakes.

“Was expected and deserved. Hopefully, he learned from this. Super lucky,” SportsTalkAtl’s account said on X.

As noted, the Falcons had been expecting some form of suspension. Now that they know they won’t have their top pass rusher for the first half of the season, they can begin making other plans, possibly even adding another veteran free agent.
