LAS VEGAS – Silvestre Sanchez showcased his full range of skills during his appearance on Dana White's Contender Series, but it was a dramatic late finish that ultimately secured him a coveted UFC contract.
Sanchez, a lightweight fighter with a record of 10 wins and just 1 loss in mixed martial arts, achieved this milestone by defeating Liam McCracken, who held a record of 8-2. The decisive moment came in the third round when Sanchez landed a powerful left hook that knocked McCracken down, ensuring his entry into the UFC was sealed. UFC CEO Dana White later remarked that without that emphatic finish, he might have hesitated to offer Sanchez a contract, despite the fighter's impressive performance throughout the match.
With this victory, Sanchez not only fulfilled a personal dream of competing in the UFC but also expressed hopes that his success would inspire more fighters from Mexico to pursue opportunities in the sport. "That was always a goal, to be here in the UFC since I started in mixed martial arts," Sanchez stated during a post-fight news conference, speaking through an interpreter. He emphasized the importance of his achievement for his home region of Nayarit, suggesting that his win could open doors for other talented fighters from the area.
Sanchez highlighted the significance of the UFC Performance Institute (PI) in Mexico, calling it one of the most vital breeding grounds for talent globally. He praised the training and sparring he received there, which prepared him for the challenges of the Contender Series. "You know if someone comes through Contender Series into the UFC, coming from the PI in Mexico City, you know it’s someone who’s ready for wars," he noted, underscoring the rigorous preparation that fighters undergo.
In his bout against McCracken, Sanchez not only handed his opponent just the second loss of his professional career but also ended McCracken's impressive five-fight winning streak, all of which had come by stoppage. With this victory, Sanchez extended his own winning streak to six, with all of those wins coming by way of finish, either in the first or third round.
Despite his success, Sanchez expressed a desire to improve further, admitting he was somewhat disappointed that he could not secure an earlier finish. He plans to take the lessons learned from this experience as he prepares for his upcoming UFC debut. While he has not yet identified a specific opponent for his first fight in the promotion, he did mention a future matchup he would like to pursue.
"Maybe not for my first fight, but eventually, King Green would be a great fight," Sanchez remarked, indicating his ambition to face notable opponents in the UFC.
