Soccer player Quévin Castro has died at age 25 after he collapsed during a match in his home country of Portugal.
The Lisbon Football Association and Real Sport Clube announced Castro’s death on Saturday, Aug. 22, sharing that he collapsed during a preseason match against Estrela de Amadora at the Estádio das Seixas stadium in the city of Malveira, per ESPN and the Associated Press. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died.
“Quevin Castro was far more than a player, he was a member of our family, leaving a mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him, both on and off the pitch,” Real Sport Clube said in a social media post, the outlets reported.
“To the family, friends, and the affiliated club [Real Sport Clube], we extend our deepest condolences during this tragic time for Portuguese football,” the Lisbon Football Association added.

Castro made his professional soccer debut for English club West Bromwich Albion in 2021 and had stints at the U.K. clubs Burton, Notts County and Gateshead. In 2023, he joined York, making 15 appearances in total for the team before returning to Portugal.
“Quevin joined the Baggies as a teenager in 2021 and went on to make his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal,” West Bromwich wrote in a social media post. “He made his maiden league outing for the club in February 2022 and later had loan spells at Burton, Notts County and Gateshead, before departing The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.”
The club shared that its players are set to pay tribute to Castro during their match against Burnley on Sunday, Aug. 23. The team will hold a period of applause in the 25th minute, and the players will wear black armbands.
“The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time,” West Bromwich wrote on social media.

Real Sport Clube’s friendly match against Estrela de Amadora on Saturday was postponed after the incident.
“Estrela da Amadora hereby express their deepest sorrow for the passing of Quevin Castro, player for Real Massama [Real Sport Clube],” the opposing team wrote on social media following Castro’s death.
“At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extend their most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quevin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massama structure,” it continued. “Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quevin.”
