It may be only Week 2, but it’s never too early to be in fight mode.
Football teams have 11 weeks and 10 games to solidify their postseason spot. If they don’t fight from the opening kickoff, it may not produce the finished product that they desire.
We should all be ready to put up a fight. Strength in the face of struggle extends beyond the playing field. Fighting to stay ahead. Fighting to find enough time in the day. Fighting to ignore the complainers and the doubters and fighting against those who try to take you down.
Every sports fan loves rivalry games, especially when the matchup has its own nickname.
The next installment of the Backyard Brawl commences from Russell tomorrow night. The Red Devils won their 40th game in the series in 2025 after each team enjoyed a three-game winning streak in the previous six campaigns.
Teams seem to bring a little more fight to these games and show the best versions of themselves.

Week 2 Picks
Ashland over Tates Creek—With a tough schedule and Class 4A competition, the Tomcats always have to “Fight The Power” (Public Enemy) each week. The Commodores make their way to Putnam Stadium, but can they stop the playmakers on the other side of the ball?
Boyd County over Rock Hill—The Lions looked “Unstoppable” (Sia) against their Ohio opponent last week, and I doubt it will change Friday against the Redmen.
West Carter over Fairview—The Eagles have shown they are a “Fighter” (Christina Aguilera), but the Comets come ready to fight after a letdown at home to Lewis County last week.
Lawrence County over Lincoln County—Dawgs ultra-utility player Kaden Johnson says a lot with his effort, like I will compete “Till I Collapse” (Eminem). The popular rapper received assistance from Nate Dogg for this title, so, of course, I had to use it when predicting another Lawrence County victory.
Lewis County over Morgan County—The Lions had to “Fight For Your Right” (Beastie Boys) to party. Lewis County ended a 25-game losing streak in Week 1 and wants to keep the celebration going for another seven days. The Sparks and Rec pick-dreading Cougars stand in their way.
Raceland over Pleasure Ridge Park—The Rams know how to bounce back and are built for “Times Like These” (Foo Fighters). Raceland defeated the Panthers by 50 last year in Louisville and pounces on the Class 6A school again.
East Carter over Rowan County—Raiders coach Tim Champlin knows his team will be “Stronger” (Kelly Clarkson) by playing a championship-caliber team like Belfry to start the season. East Carter shows its strength against the Vikings.
Russell over Greenup County—The two teams respect the rivalry, but there is “Bad Blood” (Taylor Swift) between them. Both step up the competition after solid opening wins. The line of scrimmage is where the game will be decided and which defense can withstand explosive plays.
Ironton over Salem—I don’t know much about New Jersey high school football, but at Tanks Stadium, “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” (Elton John). The Fighting Tigers impose their will versus the visiting Rams.
