This week, the Stark County High School Cross Country Coaches Association recognized outstanding athletes in the region by naming their Runners of the Week. Among the honorees are two state champions, showcasing the depth of talent in Stark County's cross country scene.
In the Boys Division I-II category, Sam Baker from Hoover High School earned recognition for his impressive performance at the HOKA Night Showcase. Competing against a field of 432 runners, Baker finished eighth with a time of 15:53. This remarkable achievement places him among the top 10 all-time runners at Hoover. Last year, he was honored with All-Federal League accolades as a sophomore and successfully qualified for the state meet, establishing himself as a key competitor in the league.
Brice Fuller, a junior from Fairless High School, was named the standout in the Boys Division III-IV category. Fuller claimed victory at the Pickerington North Invitational, finishing first among Division I and II runners with a time of 15:26.07. He is not only a strong contender this season but also the reigning Division III state champion, adding to his impressive resume and elevating the profile of Fairless in the competitive landscape of Ohio high school cross country.
On the girls' side, Abby Parsons from Jackson High School was recognized in the Girls Division I-II category. Parsons finished second at the GlenOak Golden Eagle Invitational, leading her team to victory with a time of 19:27. As a first-team All-Federal League and All-Stark County selection, Parsons played a significant role in Jackson's performance last year, helping the team secure a 12th place finish at the Division I state meet. Her personal best of 18:55 demonstrates her potential as a top competitor in the upcoming meets.
Lastly, in the Girls Division III-IV category, Irelyn Johnson from Marlington High School took home the honors after winning the Gold Division race at the HOKA Night Showcase. Johnson's victory follows an exceptional junior season where she achieved titles in Stark County, the Eastern Buckeye Conference, as well as district and regional championships. She also celebrated her first Division III state championship, solidifying her status as a leading athlete in the region.
