The competition for the Indianapolis Colts' backup quarterback role between Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard is going to go down to the wire.
Following Thursday's joint practice, head coach Shane Steichen was asked when he planned on naming the Colts' backup for the 2026 season.
"I don't have a timetable on that," Steichen said, via The Indy Star's Nathan Brown.
Steichen added that he wanted to let things play out over the next two weeks. Still on the schedule are a pair of preseason games and a week of practices to further evaluate the two quarterbacks.
From the outside looking in, it's difficult to determine who may hold the advantage currently. Both quarterbacks have had their moments, and both have had their struggles.
Ultimately, the most consistent of the two will likely win the job.
"I thought they both had a good camp," Steichen said.
That said, Richardson did perform better in the Colts' preseason opener, but Leonard will have the chance to match when he starts against Atlanta on Saturday.
While Richardson's trade request remains on the table, it doesn't sound like he will be going anywhere.
