GENEVA — The expansion of the Geneva Youth Football programs will be a little easier thanks to a $10,000 gift from Sunset Transportation.
The presentation was recently made at Memorial Field with league officials, coaches and players on hand.
GYF President O.J. Livingston said the program has 130 athletes and cheerleaders involved, and moved from a fall-only program to an additional spring coed flag football addition.
“I fully expect our flag football program to grow,” he said. The program is kindergarten to sixth grade.
Livingston said the fall tackle program includes three teams in different age groups, and competition with area communities ending in a championship for each division late in the fall.
He said the program will benefit from the donation in a variety of ways, including field renovations at Memorial Field, assistance in paying for new uniforms and other equipment needed by the league.
Memorial Fields is a popular place in the summer and fall, Livingston said. He said it is a community center all summer long with people stopping to watch practice.
The league has had preliminary discussions with the Geneva Area City Schools athletic department regarding the possibility of using the school’s new stadium for games, but Memorial Field is key in the long-term plans of the league.
“We aren’t leaving Memorial Field anytime soon,” Livingston said.
Sunset Transportation Owner David McGrath said extraordinary communities are forged when families, businesses, and organizations unite behind their children.
