Entering a critical few days with two joint practices and a preseason game ahead, where do things currently stand for the Indianapolis Colts' 2026 rookie draft class?
Let's take a closer look at the progress each player has made.
LB CJ AllenAllen has missed a fair amount of time in training camp with a calf and hamstring injury, but when on the field, he is consistently working with the first-team defense. He has impressed the coaching staff and is a projected Day 1 starter, although it does look like Cam Bynum will wear the green dot.
S AJ HaulcyHaulcy was competing with Hunter Wohler for the starting safety role next to Bynum, and while nothing is official at this point, that does appear to be Haulcy's job. He brings added versatility and ball skills to the Colts' secondary.
G Jalen FarmerFarmer is going to be a backup in his first season, filling in at right guard if needed and potentially left guard. All of Farmer's snaps in college came on the right side of the line, and that's where he's often worked in training camp. Dalton Tucker could be an option at left guard.
LB Bryce BoettcherBoettcher flies around the football field and brings another physical presence to the middle of the defense. He is competing with Jaylon Carlies and Austin Ajiake for the top backup linebacker spot on the depth chart.
DE George Gumbs Jr.Still relatively new to the position, refinement is needed for Gumbs. That said, he has already flashed the potential and upside he possesses. He likely makes the team, but his role in Year 1 could be small.
DE Caden CurryCurry was a standout performer in the Colts' preseason opener. So much so that he should be given more opportunities to push Micheal Clemons and Jaylahn Tuimoloau for some snaps.
RB Seth McGowanWith DJ Giddens sidelined, McGowan has taken the bulk of the RB2 reps. As of now, the job appears to be his for the taking. He brings a physical running style to the backfield, but must continue to show he can contribute in the passing game, specifically as a blocker.
WR Deion BurksBurks is fighting for a roster spot. Compared to Anthony Gould and Coleman Owen, Burks does offer greater versatility, able to line up inside and out, but the return game may ultimately determine which of these players earns that final roster spot at wide receiver.
