The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made a notable addition to their practice squad by signing quarterback Easton Stick, who was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts. This move comes as the Buccaneers seek to bolster their quarterback depth, especially after Jalon Daniels secured the backup position behind starter Baker Mayfield.
Daniels, an undrafted rookie, showcased his talents during the preseason, ultimately outperforming veteran Jake Browning for the number two spot on the depth chart. Following this decision, Browning opted to explore other opportunities rather than rejoin the Buccaneers' practice squad. This left Tampa Bay in a position where they needed a veteran presence to support Mayfield and the rookie Daniels.
Easton Stick, who entered the NFL after being drafted in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019, brings valuable experience to the Buccaneers. Although his playing time has been limited, Stick started four games in 2023 when Chargers' star quarterback Justin Herbert was sidelined due to a season-ending injury. In those starts, Stick completed 63.8% of his passes, accumulating 1,129 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while also adding 144 rushing yards and a touchdown.
In addition to his time with the Chargers, Stick spent the 2025 season with the Atlanta Falcons, where he was under the guidance of current Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson and quarterbacks coach T.J. Yates. Robinson's connection with Stick dates back to 2019 when he assisted in preparing the North Dakota State quarterback for the NFL Draft. This prior relationship is expected to facilitate Stick's transition into the Buccaneers' system, allowing him to contribute without needing to start from scratch.
By signing Stick, the Buccaneers have secured a safety net at the quarterback position, which is particularly crucial given the potential risks of relying solely on a rookie backup. Tampa Bay appears committed to allowing Daniels the chance to develop as Mayfield's primary backup, but having Stick on the practice squad provides the team with a seasoned option who could be elevated to the active roster if necessary. This strategic move underscores the Buccaneers' intent to maintain a competitive edge as they navigate the challenges of the NFL season.
