Taysom Hill's old No. 7 jersey already changing hands at Saints camp

Taysom Hill's old No. 7 jersey is still in circulation, but it's already been picked up by someone else. On Thursday, it was defensive back Jonas Sanker wearing No. 7 into the New Orleans Saints' joint practice session with the Jacksonville Jaguars, not backup quarterback Hunter Dekkers. Dekkers had explained to Saints beat reporters the day before that he didn't choose the No. 7 after re-signing with the team after leaving for an opportunity with the UFL's Houston Gamblers. It was just handed to him as the only available number that was also eligible for a quarterback.

And when wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk abruptly retired a couple of days into training camp, making the No. 13 jersey available, Dekkers chose to pick it up. Some fans still aren't happy to see the number Michael Thomas wore being passed around. But you can't please everyone. So now Dekkers is No. 13 and Sanker is No. 7.

Either way, Sanker is the Saints' new No. 7. Last year's third-round pick out of Virginia is shouldering heavy responsibilities. He's expected to play a key role in replacing Alontae Taylor as the team's primary slot defender when they run nickel personnel, which has been their most-common personnel package under both Brandon Staley and Dennis Allen. We'll see if someone else takes the No. 33 jersey Sanker was using.
