Teagan Henry, a senior quarterback for Greenon High School, approaches the game of football with a strategic mindset, likening it to a game of chess. His ability to anticipate opponents' moves and set up plays was on full display during a recent matchup against Northwestern.
In a commanding performance on August 28, Henry shattered school records by throwing for an impressive 420 yards, completing 33 of 47 passes and tossing four touchdown passes. Additionally, he contributed to the scoreboard by rushing for two more touchdowns, leading Greenon to a decisive 43-6 victory.
For his outstanding efforts, Henry has been honored as the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week for the period of August 24-30. This recognition was awarded through a reader voting process, highlighting his remarkable performance on the field.
Reflecting on his achievement, Henry expressed his desire to win the award consecutively, having previously earned it in October 2022. He credited the offensive line for their solid performance, stating, “We dominated up front, I don’t think I got sacked, and our receivers are just really talented and dominated too.” This teamwork was crucial in his record-setting game.
This season marks Henry's third year as the starting quarterback for Greenon. Last year, he nearly reached 2,000 passing yards and maintained an impressive 3-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio. After a slower start in the season opener against Shawnee, Henry's explosive performance against Northwestern showcased his growth and adaptability.
“Just the calmness now, you know last year having learned everything and repping it more, I’m now able to see the field better, make smarter, quicker decisions and I think that’s all really helped us,” Henry explained, highlighting his development as a player.
As he matures into a leadership role, Henry embraces the responsibility that comes with being a quarterback. He enjoys the challenge of making critical decisions during games, which aligns with his chess analogy for football. His aspiration is to inspire future generations of Greenon Knights, hoping they will strive for success just as he and his teammates are doing this season.
Henry reminisced about his childhood, recalling the 2019 Greenon team that achieved the best record in nearly four decades but missed out on the postseason. This memory fuels his determination to lead his team to greater heights. “We really wanted to win the OHC South last year,” he said. “Felt like we could have, and we didn’t. That’s actually been inspiring and what’s driving us to reach that goal this year.”
