Ten Takeaways From Seattle Mariners' Latest Gut-Punch Loss

NEW YORK -- The bad times continued for the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, as they fell for the second straight night at Yankee Stadium.

After Tuesday's 4-1 loss, the M's dropped an 10-5 affair in this one, squandering leads of 3-0, 4-1 and 5-3 in the process.

The Mariners are now 56-65 and while this weekend's series in Houston represents some last bastions of playoff hope, any optimism is misguided at the moment.

Seattle is 5.0 games back in the American League West right now.

Here's what you need to know from this one, in no particular order:

Mariners finally get some offense via the longball 

The Mariners hit three home runs in the first three innings, eventually taking a 4-1 lead on first inning blasts from Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodriguez, and then a third inning shot from Dominic Canzone.

Rodriguez now has 19 homers on the season, as does Canzone. Canzone now has 50 RBIs.

Leading 3-0 in the top of the second, the Mariners got the first two men before Colt Emerson struck out and Taylor Ward bounced into a double play.

Leading 5-3 in the fifth, Seattle had two on and one out, but Brendan Donovan bounced into a double play.

Tied at 5-5 in the sixth, Seattle had two on and one out, but Cole Young popped up and Randy Arozarena grounded out to second.

Critical missed challenge leads to M's issues

Leading 3-1 in the top of the bottom of the third inning, Spencer Jones was at the plate with two on and two out. In a 2-2 count, Bryce Miller threw a pitch just off the plate that Cal Raleigh challenged, narrowly missing.

Jones then hit a two-run double to make it 4-3.

Little things cost the M's in multiple spots

1) With two on out and one out in the third, Colt Emerson failed to get a bunt down, which led to the Ward double play.

2) On Jones's double that made it 4-3, Randy Arozarena missed the cutoff man when there would have been a play at the plate. Instead, there was no chance at that. A good throw could have kept it to 4-2. 

3) In the top of the seventh inning, with Donovan up and facing a 2-strike count, Josh Naylor tried to get a good jump and steal second, but he mistimed it and ws caught stealing. 

Delay in top of fifth inning explained 

After the Mariners took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth, there was a lengthy delay as three young men ran on the field before getting tackled by Yankee Stadium security. Two of them bucked, requiring more security and more time. 

After the delay, Donovan hit into a double play, and Miller gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the delay potentially playing a role, though he did successfully get the first two outs.

The M's catcher, who spoke candidly on Tuesday night about finding any way he could to help the team, came out with a black bat in his first at-bat for one of the first times I can remember.

Did it make a difference? Who knows. But he was 1-for-1 with two walks in his first three plate appearances.

Colt Emerson continues to scuffle 

I have no doubt that the young Mariners shortstop will be a very good player in the future, and he's certainly helped this team defensively, but he continues to scuffle at the plate.

In perpetual swing mode, Emerson has found himself constantly behind in the count for weeks. He has 19 strikeouts and just one walk since July 25 and struck out four more times in this one.

Cole Young leaves the game

The M's second baseman, who has been one of the bright spots on the team, left the game in the bottom of the seventh inning in favor of Leo Rivas. It was reported in the eighth that he left with dizziness.

The Mariners righty gave up five earned runs over six innings, and while some of the defense didn't help him, he still gave up eight hits, with several instances of loud contact.

In addition to the Jones' two-run double in the third, he gave up a loud home run to Trent Grisham in the fifth and another RBI double to Jones after that. 

To his credit, he rebounded in the sixth to give the team some more length. He had some help, as Canzone threw out Ryan McMahon trying to stretch a single into a double.

Gabe Speier struggles in return 

Pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning, Speier, who was unavailable last night, gave up a single to George Lombard Jr. and a double to Grisham, making it 6-5. Then, a bad hop base hit by 7-5. He also hit a batter, allowed two stolen bases, and then walked in a run to make it 8-5.

The Mariners and Yankees will finish out the series on Thursday at 10:35 a.m. PT. Logan Gilbert will pitch against Max Fried.
