The Tennessee Volunteers are set to kick off their season against Furman on September 5 at 3:30 p.m. ET, marking an exciting opportunity for fans to experience the newly upgraded Neyland Stadium. This matchup not only represents the beginning of the season for the No. 18 ranked Vols but also the 28th consecutive sellout at the venue, a streak that dates back to September 2022.
Under the leadership of head coach Josh Heupel, the Volunteers have established a formidable home record, boasting a 24-4 mark at Neyland Stadium since 2022. Historically, the team has dominated their home season openers, winning each by a margin of at least 30 points during Heupel's tenure. While the nearly 102,000 attendees may not be able to see all the upgrades made to Neyland Stadium, they will certainly notice the improvements in sound quality. A state-of-the-art sound system has been installed, designed to enhance audio clarity throughout the stadium, from the lower bowl to the upper deck. This upgrade eliminates the need for on-field speakers, which have been a longstanding issue at the venue.
Alicia Longworth, Tennessee's deputy athletic director and chief marketing officer, addressed the sound issues, stating, "Sound has been an issue in Neyland for a long time. It’s an issue in a lot of large venues. We get 100,000 seats that this venue has developed over 100 years, so it wasn’t a quick turnkey fix. Finally being able to do this for our fans will be really exciting." This upgrade is part of a larger effort to modernize the stadium experience for fans.
In addition to the sound system, Neyland Stadium has seen expanded concourses on the third level of the south end zone, which will alleviate congestion that has been a problem for fans entering and exiting the venue. Longworth likened the previous situation to "interstate traffic at rush hour," highlighting the need for these improvements, especially given the Vols' impressive sellout streak.
The enhancements also include a new Champions Corner plaza located outside Gate 9, featuring a statue of General Robert Neyland, new concession stands, and the removal of outdated restroom facilities in the upper deck of the south end zone. Additional televisions have been installed on the third level, providing fans more opportunities to catch the action while enjoying the game day atmosphere. Furthermore, the university has implemented new traffic flow and parking plans aimed at expediting fans' departures after the game.
