The Tennessee Titans faced disappointment in their pursuit of former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., who was claimed off waivers by the Las Vegas Raiders. The Titans were among four teams vying for the talented defensive back, but ultimately fell short in what turned out to be a highly competitive waiver process.
According to ESPN's Field Yates, Luter became the most sought-after player on the waiver wire, receiving claims from four different teams. This is notable, as typically, the highest number of claims for a single player is two. Alongside the Titans, the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Miami Dolphins also attempted to secure Luter's services, but they were outmatched by the Raiders, who held the top position on the waiver wire.
The Titans' interest in Luter was understandable, especially given his previous connection with head coach Robert Saleh, who served as his defensive coordinator during Luter's time in 2025. Luter's potential fit within Tennessee's secondary could have provided a significant boost, especially considering his upside despite a career that has been hindered by injuries.
Drafted by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 155th overall pick, Luter has played a total of 27 games in his career, recording 38 combined tackles, including 22 solo tackles, along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass defended. His 2025 season was particularly productive, as he accumulated 28 combined tackles over 17 games, showcasing his ability to contribute on the field when healthy.
Now, as he joins the Raiders, Luter will look to build on his previous performances and establish himself further in the league. Raiders General Manager John Spytek expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting Luter's quality despite his limited playing time due to injuries. Spytek noted, "He’s played quality regular season snaps. He’s a good special teams player, and we just saw the opportunity to add a player that’s got a little bit of experience to him to that room because we’ve got a very competitive room, but some young players in there. So, his experience is what was intriguing to us."
As the NFL regular season approaches, both the Titans and Raiders will be keenly observing how Luter adapts to his new environment and whether Tennessee will have another opportunity to pursue him in the future. For now, the Titans must regroup and seek other options to strengthen their secondary as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the upcoming season.
