In a thrilling finish at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night, Teoscar Hernández delivered a walk-off double that propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. This win was crucial for the Dodgers as it prevented them from being swept in the three-game series against St. Louis.
With the game on the line in the ninth inning and runners on first and second, Hernández faced Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien. After working the count full, Hernández capitalized on a sinker that was left over the plate. He drove the ball into the left-center field gap, allowing Tommy Edman to score easily, while Mookie Betts slid home just ahead of the throw, sealing the comeback win.
This victory was particularly significant for the Dodgers (83-57), who had struggled to convert opportunities with runners in scoring position in the previous games. Over the two prior contests, they had 26 at-bats with runners in scoring position but managed only one hit. Hernández's performance not only secured the win but also showcased his potential to contribute significantly as the season progresses.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed relief after the game, acknowledging the team's struggles prior to Hernández's decisive hit. “We needed it,” Roberts said. “Obviously for seven innings, it didn’t look good at all. Then we found a way to scratch one across. But a win’s a win, however it looks.”
Hernández had been experiencing a slump, entering the series with a .668 OPS against right-handed pitchers. However, he demonstrated improvement, going six for 13 in the three-game set against the Cardinals. His recent performance has been encouraging, especially following a home run he hit against Framber Valdez in a previous game in Detroit.
After struggling for much of the season, Hernández noted that a recent adjustment in his swing has contributed to his better results. “It’s just the way my body was reacting, was more under control,” he explained. “I was able to notice everything that I was doing, even though it was an out. …That was the swing that is leading to all the good results that I’ve been having lately.”
Roberts had previously considered a platoon in left field due to Hernández's struggles, but the decision to keep him in the lineup appears to be paying off. “I’ve always said that we’re better when he’s in the lineup,” Roberts stated. “But performance certainly matters, and this series, albeit a small sample, was really good.”
Hernández's clutch hitting was not only pivotal for the Dodgers but also provided a much-needed boost to a team that had been pressing in high-pressure situations. Edman, who led the Dodgers with four hits in the game, praised Hernández's timely contribution. “It was huge to finally get that big hit,” Edman remarked. “Teo came through huge in that moment. Just can’t say enough about him, and that was just such a huge at-bat, and able to kind of steal that win today.”
