Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has recently spoken out about Sophie Cunningham, who has become a divisive figure in the WNBA.

After Cunningham’s comments in regard to transgender athletes, there were some who came out to give her the nickname ‘MAGA Barbie’.

However, some people have shown support for the Indiana Fever player, including holding rallies.

Now, Texas Attorney General Paxton has suggested people should be admiring Cunningham’s courage instead of criticising her.

After attending a Fever game in Dallas this week, Paxton put out a tweet in which he stated he will ‘fight to keep men out of women’s sports’.

Now, the Attorney General has spoken to Fox News about Cunningham and said: “Instead of criticising her [Cunningham], how about we admire something of great courage, which is what she has accomplished as a young woman.

“Standing up is very difficult. Very few people are willing to do it, and I have a lot of admiration. I hope a lot of Texans have a lot of admiration for what she has accomplished at such a young age.”

Paxton also praised Cunningham for ‘standing up for young women’, saying: “Look, I admire her. She’s got tremendous courage. It’s what we need in our country, more courage, standing up for what is right, and actually standing up for young women that want the opportunity to compete in sports.

“Obviously, we have these policies where men compete against women, which makes it very difficult for these women to compete in sports.”

The Texas AG was then asked about former NBA players Royce White and Enes Kanter declaring for the WNBA.

He said: “When these guys can declare, and it’s under the rules, they’re perfectly within their rights to do it. So I think they’re just highlighting the ludicrousness of what the WNBA is promoting here.”
