‘The Cardinal Countdown: 19 Days Until Kickoff’

MICAH CARTER #19

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 265lb

Position: DL

Class: RS Junior

Hometown: Louisville, KY

Summary: Carter followed his commitment to Purdue and Brohm back in 2022 with a commitment to the Cards shortly thereafter. Since joining the program the long and strong edge has gotten some opportunities  to play on the line and on special teams during the last few years. In 2025 Carter played in over nine games and then in the bowl game got a big chunk of time getting over thirty snaps up on the line. His contributions have been a big help as his participation continues to grow each year.

In 2026 the return of AJ Green and the addition of Jerod Smith put a damper in the opportunity to get significant snaps, but Carter will still be looking to make a big impact. While he may not show up on the starting lineup in game one he is another part of an extremely deep line and more specifically defensive edge group. With a couple more seasons of eligibility Carter has a chance to keep moving up in the pecking order and earn his way into more playing time, familiar with the defensive approach, and overall expectations. While technique and skill can be developed, they don’t grow 6’6” 280lb lineman on trees….and if they do, we should plant one of those tress outside the Trager Center. While we wait on that tree shipment, check out Carter’s comments after practice last week.

MASON FIELDS #19

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 215lb

Position: QB

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Villa Hills, KY

Summary: Mason, growing up just a few miles from the Cincinnati airport, that resides in Northern Kentucky, had the Cards take “flier” on him earlier this year. Previously committed to Hillsdale College, Fields got an offer as a PWO and accepted the invite to learn from one of the better offensive minds in the sport….Brian Brohm 🙂

Throwing for nearly 2,700 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior for Dixie Heights, Fields has a nice arm and  good size, standing at 6’4” and 215lbs. For those thinking Fields is just a spot holder in the QB room, tell that to Doughty at WKU or O’Connell at Purdue,  both guys who started at the bottom of the QB list and worked their way into playing time, and even a sandwich or three in the pros. I’m not calling Fields an NFL caliber QB before he takes a college snap, I’m just saying he has put himself in a good spot to learn a professional offense and has the chance to make plays. If we see Fields in 2026 outside of garbage time snaps I’ll be surprised, but he could be a nice depth piece in the room in coming seasons. I saw him make some solid throws a couple weeks ago in the open practice, so he has the arm, now its about developing the understanding and digesting the playbook.
