Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn ImagesFormer Detroit Red Wings draft pick Joe Veleno, 26, is entering his seventh pro season, playing for his fourth NHL team, and the hockey world is still trying to make him a goal scorer.
Velno didn’t receive a qualifying after from the Montreal Canadiens after generating two goals and five points in 62 games. Since breaking into the NHL in 2020-21 as a promising first rounder, Veleno shows 40 goals in 367 games.
He signed with the New York Rangers, and the Montreal Gazette wrote that perhaps this is the right fit to “unlock” his offense.
“Maybe this is that fresh start on a team that, in my opinion, is in more of a rebuilding than retooling mode,” TSN analyst Jon Goyens, who once coached Veleno, told the Gazette. “I think he can find himself quickly. It’s still the NHL and people want to win … but they’re far removed from their Presidents’ (Trophy) of a couple years ago.
I think he has the opportunity to start in the middle of the pack, a top-nine role. After that, it comes down to executing and being consistent. If he can do that, there have been many NHL players who have started their career at 26. “
