Holland residents will have a chance to watch and try drone racing during a daylong competition and community event at Helder Park on Aug. 22.
The event will gather professional drone racers, hobbyists and spectators for races, demonstrations and hands-on activities centered on first-person-view drone racing, according to a community announcement from Holland Township Parks and Recreation.
Pilots will navigate a technical course with gates, flags and dive chutes while competing for the fastest times. They'll use specific three-inch drones with a limit on RPM, a format designed to guarantee evenly matched competition that highlights user skill and strategy.
The qualifying races begin at 10 a.m. — with competitors vying for positions in the afternoon bracket. The elimination-style bracket racing begins at 3 p.m.
“This is a community event like no other,” wrote Holland Township Parks and Recreation Director Darrin Duistermars. “A unique opportunity such as this brings people together of all ages to witness state-of-the-art technology in a fun and interactive way.”
According to organizers, on-site monitors will display real-time video feeds from the drones, giving spectators a pilot's-eye view of the course. The event also includes opportunities for visitors to participate, such as computer flight simulators.
The course will be open for "Fun Fly" and "Buddy Box" beginning at 5 p.m. During the latter, spectators can fly alongside a professional pilot using a linked-control system that allows instruction and assistance during flight.
