EVANSVILLE — As the third annual Panther Classic approaches, the question arises: Is this the premier high school girls soccer tournament in Indiana? The answer lies in its history of success and the caliber of teams that participate. This tournament has firmly established itself as a significant event on the calendar, serving as a pre-Labor Day challenge for some of the finest teams in Southern Indiana. Fans can expect another exciting showcase of soccer talent this year.
The Panther Classic will take place at Goebel Sports Complex, featuring 18 varsity girls soccer programs from Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The depth of talent is noteworthy, with eight teams currently ranked in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association poll, including five of the top 18 in Class 3A, along with four other state semifinalists. This level of competition is what sets the Panther Classic apart.
Reitz coach Trey McClain expressed the tournament's significance, stating, "We wanted to create an event that gave local teams a chance to test themselves against the best in the region. This year’s field highlights how that early vision has become a reality. Several of the best teams in the country will be showcasing their talents in Evansville this weekend." The tournament will kick off with a single game on Thursday, followed by the majority of the action taking place on Friday and Saturday.
Ticket prices for the Panther Classic are set at $20 for a weekend pass after September 2, while single-game tickets will be available at the gate for $10. Students can gain entry for just $5 with a valid student ID, and children aged 10 and under can attend for free.
The Southwestern Indiana contingent includes teams such as Castle, Central, Day School, Mater Dei, Mount Vernon, North, Northeast Dubois, Reitz, and Washington, with four of these teams currently ranked. The tournament's allure is heightened by the impressive lineup of teams expected to compete. Among the top contenders are:
Bloomington South: The No. 15 Panthers have faced a challenging schedule, currently holding a 1-2-2 record. Their sole victory was a convincing 3-0 shutout against Castle. They will face Fishers, Lexington Catholic, and Central Hardin in the tournament.
Center Grove: Ranked No. 4, the Trojans are recognized as one of Indiana's elite teams, having reached the semi-state last season. They have recorded three shutouts so far, including a 3-0 victory over Bloomington South. Center Grove's opponents this weekend include Central Hardin, Collierville, and Castle.
Central Hardin: The Bruins are currently rated as the top team in the nation according to MaxPreps. After falling in the KHSAA state semifinals last fall, they are set to take on Center Grove, Castle, and Bloomington South this weekend. Their matchup against Center Grove on Friday night is anticipated to be particularly thrilling.
Collierville: The Dragons reached the semifinals of the TSSAA Division I Class AAA tournament last year and have started the 2026 season undefeated, scoring 25 goals in four games. They are currently ranked 10th in the nation on MaxPreps and will compete against North, Westfield, and Center Grove.
Lexington Catholic: This state semifinalist from Kentucky returns a strong roster despite losing their top goal scorer to injury. They will face North, Bloomington South, and Fishers in the tournament.
Oldenburg Academy: Ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, the Twisters are one of Indiana's top small-school programs. They have already faced tough competition this season, including losses to New Palestine, Park Tudor, and Lawrenceburg. Oldenburg will take on Central, Northeast Dubois, and Reitz.
Westfield: Another top-five team in Class 3A, Westfield lost in the sectional championship to Carmel. They enter the tournament undefeated and will compete against North and Collierville.
As the Panther Classic unfolds, the spotlight will also be on individual players to watch. Each team boasts standout athletes, including Aubrey Baker from Oldenburg Academy, Ellie Barron from Day School, and Lucy Bennett from Castle, among others.
McClain emphasized the dual value of the Panther Classic, noting, "First, the SIAC is a deep conference. Each week, when we play each other, it’s a dogfight. To give our schools a chance to stay home and still face challenging competition from outside the area is fantastic. The second value is to our community. The Panther Classic doesn’t happen without the tireless work of numerous individuals ranging from parents that help coordinate all the countless details to the Evansville Regional Sports Commission to the Reitz athletic department."
