Marcus Freeman gave his thoughts about the sudden influx of former NFL players into college after the conversation around eligibility took a new turn. The Fighting Irish may have had a chance to bring back defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka, but Freeman made it clear it was not going to happen.

“I haven’t talked to him,” Freeman said to the media on Friday. “For us right here at Notre Dame, it’s just too late in the graduate admissions process. I don’t think it would put a person in a good situation this late … to have success in the classroom and on the field. You’re not going to set that person up to have success.”

Fans praised the decision, even if it meant missing out on a big name who could have returned for a year and bolstered the team’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff.

“Thank goodness. This is leadership,” one fan wrote.

Tuihalamaka went undrafted and unsigned by NFL franchises this year but benefited from court rulings in Colorado and Louisiana. With the NCAA pushing back, the case continues to be in a state of limbo.

Junior Tuihalamaka has committed to LSU

Soon after Marcus Freeman’s comments, Junior Tuihalamaka committed to LSU out of the portal.

Lane Kiffin’s LSU appears to be in a different headspace than Notre Dame, quickly landing Tuihalamaka and bolstering its depth as it begins its SEC charge soon.
