The Tennessee Titans had a solid showing against the Seattle Seahawks in a joint practice on Friday and will look to close out the week on a high note in their second preseason game.
Head coach Robert Saleh again says all available players will see the field, and it will be interesting to see whether any injured Titans return to action, especially rookies Keldric Faulk and Nick Singleton. On top of continuing to build toward the start of the regular season, there are still some bubble players fighting for some of the final roster spots.
This should be a great battle under the lights at Nissan Stadium, and here are four things to watch.
Offensive line development and depthAlthough the line is starting to come together and looked good against the San Francisco 49ers last week and the Seahawks during the joint practice, the Titans’ offensive line still has some battles that need to sort themselves out. With Fernando Carmona having the inside track to start at right guard, the depth along the interior still has to sort itself out.
Cordell Volson, Jackson Slater, Pat Coogan, and Andre James are battling it out for the final roster spots, and their in-game performances can have an impact on the outcome. Volson would appear to be lagging behind due to the position flexibility of Coogan, James, and Slater, but he can regain some ground with a solid outing.
At swing tackle, Austin Deculus appeared to play himself out of contention in his battle with Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson, but things could change with a solid outing.
Wide receiver battle continuesIt is widely accepted that the Titans’ top five receivers are set, and the battle behind them is still going strong. No one knows how many receivers the Titans intend to keep, and the depth at wide receiver continues to grow with undrafted rookies Hank Beatty and Tyren Montgomery making a late push.
Entering the game, three players, Xavier Restrepo, KJ Osborn, and Bryce Oliver, appear to have the inside track to one of the final spots, and they all bring different skill sets to the table.
Cornerback play must be betterIt has been well documented that the Titans struggled against the 49ers, and many outside the organization are concerned about where the unit stands as the preseason deepens. Cor’Dale Flott really needs to have a bounce-back performance against the Seahawks after laying an egg against San Francisco,
Behind the top four cornerbacks, Alontae Taylor, Cor’Dale Flott, Marcus Harris, and Joshua Williams, there is an interesting battle developing between some young defensive backs. Micah Robinson and Keydrain Calligan have both flashed, but some of the other defenders are gaining confidence and making plays.
Special Teams standoutsAgainst the 49ers, kicker Joey Slye eased some concerns with an outstanding performance, but the special teams had some hiccups with penalties and mistakes. With the position battles still raging, players making an impact on special teams could find a way into one of the final few unclaimed roster spots, and there will be no better time to show up than against the defending Super Bowl champs.
