Tony Romo teases possible CBS return after taking responsibility for OWI arrest

Former NFL star turned CBS Sports broadcaster Tony Romo was hit with three additional citations stemming from his July OWI arrest earlier this week.

Romo was placed on leave by the network following his arrest, but a recent statement from his rep teases a potential return.

The former Dallas Cowboys star’s team is reportedly “communicating with CBS about next steps.” The statement was shared with TMZ Sports after news of his additional citations surfaced.

While Romo’s team appears to have some optimism that something could be worked out with CBS, others believe that the OWI arrest may be too much to overcome, and CBS is already planning for a future without Romo by giving a test run to J.J. Watt to kick off the 2026 regular season.

The statement from Romo’s spokesperson read, “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved. We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close, and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”

Romo’s spokesperson’s statement is much different than what CBS Sports president David Berson had to say following the arrest, making it clear that there was no timetable for his return.

Romo is still owed $72 million over the next four years from the 10-year, $180 million deal he signed in 2020. Whether he ever sees that money remains to be seen.

What we do know, however, is that if Watt performs well alongside legendary play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, it will be much easier for CBS Sports to move on.
