Torquay United manager Jimmy Ball says his side "won a fight" as they scored late on to win 2-1 at Tonbridge Angels.
Matt Jay's 83rd-minute winner secured the Gulls' first National League South victory of the season after last week's 1-1 draw at home to Horsham.
Torquay debutant Kian Jenkins scored direct from a 17th-minute corner to give Ball's side the lead.
Callum Morton hit the post with a long-range effort early in the second half that almost made it 2-0, but the hosts struck back midway through the period thanks to Ethan Sutcliffe's close-range strike.
But Jay was on hand to get the winner as substitute Sean Robertson played in the former Exeter City forward to score from 10 yards.
The hosts had Japhte Tanga sent off late on, but still had time to almost secure a point - Torquay goalkeeper Toby Savin produced an excellent save from Alfie Pavey's injury time header.
"It wasn't pretty. There's some bits that are frustrating me, but we won a fight," Ball told BBC Radio Devon.
"We had to dig deep and show character and really dig in - which has been something that I've levelled at the team at the end of last season and early this season - when the game turns into that fight we win it and they did, so there's some pleasure in that.
"We could have scored a couple of times on the breakaway and that would be the only splinter for me is that our 18-yard box entries will be high, but our goal tally isn't," Ball added.
"I think that's similar to Horsham last weekend. You don't take all your chances, no team ever does, but if we did take even a third of our chances, we're handsome winners.
"But we've got to take them and we've got to start having more attempts, I think we're trying to score great goals and instead of scoring just goals."
