Newcastle United earned its first Premier League victory under Matthias Jaissle with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, as Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa struck after halftime.
Goalie Lukas Hornicek also played a major role in net, making several first-half saves before Newcastle took control in the second half.

— Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 29, 2026Truth be told, the Magpies were the better side to start the game thanks to a high-up placement and active pressing, although Tottenham slowly but surely turned into the stronger side through the whole first half and created the better chances past the midway point of the first frame.
Pedro Porro saw one close-range effort blocked, while Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke both forced good saves from Hornicek, and although Newcastle more or less controlled Spurs for a while, the Mags struggled to create clear openings for themselves outside of a brewing Amar Dedic-Elanga connection down the right.
Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman handled Tottenham’s central threats well during the first half, and new midfielder Nico Gonzalez, making his debut after joining from Manchester City, also settled quickly and showed his sublime passing range and calmness to direct the game.

The match truly shifted after the break. Just past the hour, Gonzalez launched a superb diagonal pass toward Dedic, whose header found Elanga inside the box. The winger controlled, spun away from Sandro Tonali and drilled a left-footed finish across Antonin Kinsky and in off the far post for his second goal in two league games.
Jaissle then made a proactive double change, introducing Sean Steur and Nick Woltemade for Gonzalez and Joe Willock. The move paid off almost immediately.
Lewis Hall delivered a deep corner, Woltemade headed the ball back into the six-yard area, and Wissa improvised a kick with his back to goal, hooking the ball over himself and into the net.

Hornicek earned his first Premier League clean sheet, and Newcastle’s defensive shape remained disciplined through the closing stages. Wissa and Elanga were later withdrawn after another great display, with Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey helping see out the result.

Through two matches, pending Sunday’s and Monday’s slate of games, the Magpies sit third (yes, you read that right) in the table, only trailing Man City and… Hull, of all sides.
Newcastle will get a week off and be next in action at home against Bournemouth on Saturday, Sept. 5, looking to build on this strong start to the season.
