Trabzonspor Accepts Resignation of Head Coach Fatih Tekke Following Europa League Exit

In a surprising turn of events, Trabzonspor has officially accepted the resignation of head coach Fatih Tekke after initially rejecting his request. The decision comes in the wake of a disappointing performance in the Europa League, where the Turkish club was eliminated by Hungarian side Ferencvaros, losing 5-0 on aggregate.

Tekke, who took the reins at Trabzonspor in March 2025, led the team to a commendable third-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig last season. However, the recent Europa League exit seems to have prompted his emotional decision to step down. The club's management first dismissed his resignation on Friday, suggesting that Tekke's choice was influenced by the intense emotions surrounding the defeat.

On Wednesday, Trabzonspor released a statement confirming that a mutual understanding had been reached with Tekke, allowing both parties to part ways amicably. The club emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of Trabzonspor and its long-term goals.

In their statement, Trabzonspor acknowledged Tekke's contributions over his 18-month tenure, highlighting the significant value he brought to the club. They noted his role in developing players and achieving important sporting and financial successes, including winning the Turkish Cup, which added to the club's storied history.

“We thank our coach for his efforts, his dedicated work, the successes he delivered, and the value he added to Trabzonspor,” the statement read. It underscored Tekke's commitment to the club, stating that he would never allow his presence to harm Trabzonspor in any way.

Despite the managerial change, Trabzonspor will continue to compete in European football this season, as they have qualified for the Europa Conference League. Among their opponents will be Scottish club Hearts, adding to the competitive landscape of their upcoming fixtures.

This summer, Trabzonspor made significant signings, including the acquisition of Mohamed Salah, who joined after mutually parting ways with Liverpool. Salah, a prolific scorer and one of the top players in the Premier League, has already made an impact at his new club, scoring twice in a recent 2-1 victory against Istanbul Basaksehir.

Additionally, the club secured the services of Premier League winner Fabinho from Liverpool and brought back goalkeeper Andre Onana on loan from Manchester United, further strengthening their squad. As the season progresses, Trabzonspor will be looking to navigate these changes and maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.
