Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has revealed that the determination displayed by quarterback Patrick Mahomes during his recovery from an ACL injury played a significant role in his decision to continue his NFL career for another season. At 36 years old, Kelce is set to embark on his 14th season with the Chiefs in 2026, despite ongoing speculation about his retirement following a disappointing playoff exit last year.

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in Week 15 of the previous season, casting doubt on the Chiefs' playoff hopes. However, witnessing Mahomes' relentless drive to return to the field in time for the 2026 NFL season inspired Kelce to push back his retirement plans. On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce discussed his motivations with his brother, Jason Kelce, stating, “I could see the hard work starting just weeks after the surgery. I could see the determination; I could see the frustration in his mind that it got to this point this year. That’s a huge reason why I’m still playing the game. I want to be there for that guy.”

Kelce's performance last season was indicative of his high level of play, as he recorded 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl. His continued presence on the field, combined with Mahomes' potential return to form, could make the Chiefs a formidable opponent in the upcoming season. The team has also made strategic additions, including running back Kenneth Walker III and the return of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, while making adjustments to their defensive line, all of which contribute to a sense of optimism heading into the new campaign.

The Chiefs are scheduled to kick off their season against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14. Mahomes has been focused on making a comeback for the start of the season since the beginning of training camp and is reportedly on track to be ready for Week 1. Although he did not participate in any preseason games, he has been a full participant in training camp, working to shake off the rust after nearly nine months of rehabilitation from his injury.

Head coach Andy Reid has remained tight-lipped about whether Mahomes will be the starting quarterback for the season opener. However, even if he is not ready to start, it is expected that he will return to the field before the end of September. The anticipation surrounding Mahomes’ availability is palpable, as his return would have a significant impact on the Chiefs' performance. Other notable players across the league are also aiming to make their returns from injuries in Week 1, but Mahomes' situation stands out as one of the most critical for the upcoming season.
