(AP) — Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has referred to training camp as his "sanctuary," a term that resonates even more after a whirlwind summer highlighted by his recent marriage to pop superstar Taylor Swift. The month-long camp at Missouri Western State University provides Kelce with a much-needed respite from the intense media scrutiny surrounding his personal life.
Just over a month ago, Kelce and Swift exchanged vows in a lavish ceremony at Madison Square Garden, a venue that holds special significance for both of them. The wedding, which featured a surprise officiant in comedian Adam Sandler and a performance by music icon Stevie Nicks, attracted a star-studded guest list that included actors like Bradley Cooper and models such as Gigi Hadid. NFL legends, including retired quarterback Tom Brady and Kelce's teammate Patrick Mahomes, were also in attendance, making it a night to remember.
Speaking for the first time at training camp, Kelce reflected on the wedding, stating, "The wedding was the best night of my life. I appreciate everybody who came out and celebrated and had fun with us. That’s about all I got for that night. It was a crazy night." His relationship with Swift began in a rather unconventional manner, stemming from a failed attempt to give her a friendship ring at one of her concerts. Their romance quickly blossomed, culminating in the nuptials that captivated fans worldwide.
Kelce's heartfelt connection to Madison Square Garden extends beyond the wedding. He has long dreamed of attending a playoff game in the iconic arena, a dream that Swift realized while he was occupied with offseason training. "I always told myself I’d go for a playoff game when the Knicks were rocking, and my wife went when I was stuck in minicamp," he said with a smile. "It was kind of cool to live out my childhood dream to be in that venue. I can’t thank the owners of MSG enough for allowing us the opportunity to do that, knowing we wanted a private event."
In addition to wedding planning, Kelce has been busy pursuing various business ventures, including acquiring a stake in the Cleveland Guardians, which puts him in a friendly rivalry with Mahomes, who owns a share of the Kansas City Royals. "I still got a lot of love for this game. I still think I can go out and play at a high level," Kelce stated. Despite these impressive numbers, the Chiefs finished the season with a disappointing 6-11 record, prompting Kelce to return for another season rather than retire after a lackluster campaign.
"The fact that we didn’t make the playoffs, I moved on pretty quick," he said, indicating his readiness to shift focus back to football. Kelce has been actively participating in offseason workouts and has brought a positive energy to training camp practices, which are known for their heat and humidity. He emphasized the importance of building chemistry with his teammates during this critical preparation period.
"This is always going to be my sanctuary. I think St. Joe has a special place in my heart," Kelce remarked. He understands the significance of these days spent grinding with his teammates, stating, "You need to have these days. You need to have this time of grinding with the guys, being around them all day, starting to create that chemistry and standard for how we are going to do things. This year it’s ramped up even more. I think that’s a big thing, just enjoy these moments with these guys I’ve built this culture with."
