Trent McDuffie opens up about blockbuster trade from Chiefs to Rams

Trent McDuffie didn't see a trade coming — not until it was already done.

The two-time All-Pro cornerback landed with the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal that sent L.A.'s No. 29 overall pick, a 2026 fifth-rounder, a 2026 sixth-rounder and a 2027 third-round pick to the Chiefs. Days later, McDuffie agreed to a four-year, $124 million extension — a deal that includes $100 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

But sitting down with Rich Eisen this week, McDuffie made clear the Rams were nowhere on his radar when the process started.

"Honestly, I was full bore, I thought I was going to be a Chief at the end of last year," McDuffie said. "Right around that [NFL] Combine time, kind of heard that that wasn't going to be a thing."

He said he knew a move might be coming — his agent had "a few talks" with Kansas City going into the offseason — but the destination caught him off guard entirely. The uncertainty in between wasn't easy. McDuffie admitted he was "a little frustrated" during the limbo, left without contract clarity while trade talk swirled online before anything was finalized.

"It was kind of like — went to bed one day not knowing, then woke up the next day as a Ram," he said. "So it really was a 360 turnaround in like four days."

That turnaround sends McDuffie back to Southern California, close to where he grew up, and back onto a defense expected to pair him with new addition Myles Garrett and, potentially, a returning Aaron Donald. McDuffie called the welcome from Sean McVay and the locker room "phenomenal," saying he already feels "back at home."

McDuffie has been all over the field for the Rams during training camp, earning praise from Davante Adamsand others with less than a month before the 2026 season starts.
