Trevor Story has been out of action since May 14 following a sports hernia injury that required surgery. As summer winds down, Story is ready to contribute for a Red Sox team looking to head to the Fall Classic.

Story completed a rehab assignment in Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, August 16. The same day the Red Sox lost to the Pirates 8-3, Story hit a single and fielded a lineout in four innings. It was a positive sign for the shortstop.

Story will start at SS again for Worcester on Tuesday, the next step in his path to return to the majors. The 33-year-old has only played in 41 games this year, hitting .206 before an injury affected him.

Since he’s been down, the Red Sox have gone from the worst to the best team in baseball. The team has had multiple win streaks, including a 15-game streak in July. While the Red Sox haven't had an August to remember, they are still at the top of the Wild Card standings and 8.5 games beyond the Rays in the AL East.

Story is ready to put in the work and help the Red Sox go on a run.

"I think we’ve shown what we can do, and we have some more key pieces coming back, so I’m excited about that. Excited to fit back into the mix, and the boys are playing well, and I’m proud of the way that we’ve turned this around," Story said to Worcester T&G Sports via Heavy.

Story signed a six-year, $140 million deal with the Red Sox in 2022. His best season in Boston came in 2025, when he hit 25 home runs and slashed .263/.308/.433 in 157 games, the first time he reached that many games since 2018. Story had three home runs this year before getting injured.

The three-time All-Star will be joined in Worcester on Wednesday by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Boston will mix and match to see what works for both as they attempt to return to Boston.

“I think Trevor's going to do mostly short,” interim manager Chad Tracy said via MLB.com. “[Kiner-Falefa’s] first game, I think, he is scheduled to play second. But we'll stay in touch with both those guys as we move along and make sure we're seeing how they're feeling.

“But I think that's the plan right now. Trevor's playing short. Izzy will play some second, and then we'll adjust if needed.”
