In a thrilling season opener on Thursday night, the UCF Knights demonstrated their offensive might with a decisive 73-6 victory against Bethune-Cookman at their home field in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the game, fans expressed concerns about potential storms in the Central Florida region, but the real excitement unfolded on the football field as the Knights quickly established dominance.
UCF's Louisville transfer, Duke Watson, made an immediate impact by taking a handoff from quarterback Alonza Barnett III on the Knights’ second offensive play. Watson, a 5-foot-11 junior running back, dashed 64 yards for a touchdown just minutes into the game, setting the tone for what would become a record-tying performance.
The Knights wasted no time in building their lead, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions. By the end of the first quarter, UCF had surged ahead 31-0, showcasing a potent combination of offensive firepower and defensive prowess. This victory not only tied the program’s record for most points in a game, previously set against Austin Peay in 2017, but also marked the largest margin of victory in UCF history, surpassing a 64-point win against Grand Valley State in 1987.
Watson concluded the game with a team-high 110 rushing yards, while Barnett, making his debut for the Knights, contributed significantly with two touchdowns—one passing and one rushing. This win also extended UCF's impressive streak of 11 consecutive season-opening victories and nine straight wins over Bethune-Cookman, who fell to 0-1 on the season.
In addition to the offensive fireworks, the Knights' defense made its mark early in the game. Safety Jayden Williams intercepted a pass intended for B-CU receiver Rickie Shaw II and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Knights’ lead to 14-0. This marked Williams' first career interception for a touchdown and was the first such play for UCF since 2025.
Barnett continued to shine, scoring on a 5-yard run to cap off an 85-yard drive, extending the lead to 21-0. He later threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jonathan Bibbs, marking Barnett's first touchdown pass as a Knight and his 50th career touchdown pass overall.
Will Stone, who joined the Knights after spending four years as a kickoff specialist at Texas, added to the scoring with a 34-yard field goal, marking his first collegiate field goal. The offensive onslaught continued as transfer running back Landen Chambers scored on a 2-yard run, bringing the score to 38-0 before halftime.
UCF's dominance carried into the second half, with Taevion Swint returning the kickoff 57 yards and then scoring on a 27-yard run, pushing the lead to 45-0. Backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins took over in the third quarter, furthering the Knights’ scoring with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Rollerson. The scoring frenzy concluded with Agyeman Addae and fourth-string quarterback Rocco Marriott each adding rushing touchdowns, bringing the final score to 73-6.
This resounding victory not only highlights UCF's offensive capabilities but also sets a promising tone for the remainder of the season under head coach Scott Frost, who celebrated his 25th win at the helm since the 2016-17 season.
