UConn men's basketball to hire San Antonio Spurs product as new general manager

The UConn men's basketball-San Antonio Spurs connection continues.

The Huskies will hire Charlie Stevens, who spent the past five seasons in the Spurs' organization, as their new general manager, a UConn source confirmed. The news was first reported by Hardwood Intel on X.

Stevens, a Bronx native, was a two-year captain of the Clark University men's basketball team before graduating in 2021. He was hired by the Spurs right after graduation as a basketball operations strategy and scouting assistant, then promoted in 2023 to player engagement and grassroots scouting coordinator.

Last summer, Stevens was promoted to the Spurs' director of grassroots scouting.

Stevens takes over for Tom Moore, who held the newly-created position for one year before announcing his retirement last month. He also continues a lineage between UConn and the Spurs. Stephon Castle was a lottery pick by San Antonio in 2024 and was NBA Rookie of the Year in 2024-25, then helped lead the Spurs to the NBA Finals this past season. 

A few weeks later, the Spurs made Tarris Reed Jr. their first-round draft pick after the 6-foot-11 center helped lead UConn to its third national championship game in four years.

Sources told CT Insider last month that UConn was looking for a younger candidate with NBA experience and overseas ties to fill the position. Stevens, who is said to have massive connections throughout the basketball world, certainly fits the bill.

It remains to be seen exactly what his role and duties will be under Dan Hurley. In general, the position deals with name, image and likeness and transfer portal issues. But Moore wore many hats in his one season in the position, part of the reason he decided to call it a career at age 61.

Stevens' hire is expected to be officially announced by UConn later this week.
