In Trumbull, Connecticut, the St. Joseph High School football team boasts a remarkable story of camaraderie and mentorship between two of its standout players, Finn Kilmartin and Will Zaccagnino. The duo, who have been friends since middle school, not only share the field as teammates but also a deeply personal connection as godfather and godson.
Kilmartin, a talented linebacker and occasional running back, and Zaccagnino, a formidable lineman standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 275 pounds, have both made significant contributions to the Hogs' football program. Their bond was solidified during Kilmartin’s sophomore year when he converted to Catholicism, a journey in which Zaccagnino played a pivotal role. As Kilmartin prepared for his baptism, confirmation, and communion at the Easter Vigil in 2025, Zaccagnino was by his side, providing support and sharing his own experiences with faith.
“We just kind of got after it,” Kilmartin recalled, highlighting the time they spent together both on the field and in the gym. “He became like my right-hand man.” This unique relationship not only enhances their personal lives but also adds a special layer to their interactions on the football field. Kilmartin noted that when Zaccagnino makes a big play, it’s not just a teammate celebrating but a godfather sharing in the moment.
Their friendship has blossomed over the years, with both players hailing from Shelton and contributing to the Hogs’ impressive record of 19-6 over the past two seasons. St. Joseph won the Class M championship two years ago and reached the semifinals last fall. Both Kilmartin and Zaccagnino received honors as part of the New Haven Register/GametimeCT All-State teams, with Zaccagnino earning a first-team spot and Kilmartin making the second team. They are also recognized as two of the four St. Joseph seniors featured on the GametimeCT 50 Players to Watch list for the current season.
As they prepare for the upcoming season, which kicks off on Thursday in Darien, both players have committed to continuing their football careers at the collegiate level, with Zaccagnino heading to Wisconsin and Kilmartin to Middlebury. Kilmartin’s journey to faith was not one he initially anticipated; he described himself as not particularly religious during his early years. However, after developing an interest in building a relationship with God, he began attending classes led by Father Ferry Galbert, the school’s former chaplain, which ultimately led to his decision to convert.
“I just felt a big connection and I pursued it with him,” Kilmartin said, reflecting on the transformative experience. Zaccagnino expressed his excitement about being Kilmartin's godfather, emphasizing the importance of faith in his life and the joy of sharing that journey with his best friend. “To think that one of my best friends is going to be joining me and he’s taking that step in the right direction with us, it’s so exciting,” Zaccagnino said.
Their relationship is not only significant off the field but also resonates within their team dynamics. Kilmartin pointed out that their unique bond has sparked interest among their peers, making them a topic of conversation among teammates. “People love it,” he said. “They’re like, ‘Wow, that’s great. You guys must be so close.’ It really means something.” As the Hogs embark on another season, both players are focused on making the most of their final year together, cherishing the memories they create both on and off the field.
