VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of South Dakota (USD) football team kicked off its season in impressive fashion, defeating Central Connecticut State (CCSU) 59-20. While much of the attention was focused on quarterback Austyn Modrzewski's remarkable debut, the Coyotes showcased a revamped roster that hints at a promising season ahead.
In his first collegiate start, Modrzewski threw for a staggering 304 yards and six touchdowns, tying a single-game record for USD while also setting a new mark for most passing yards in a quarterback's debut. Additionally, he contributed with 81 rushing yards and another touchdown, making his first outing one for the record books. However, the victory was not solely a product of his performance; it also marked the debut of 13 players in Coyote uniforms, with seven on offense and six on defense, who played pivotal roles in the team's success.
The Coyotes' next challenge comes this Saturday as they head to Greeley, Colorado, to face Northern Colorado. Last year, Northern Colorado nearly derailed USD's season, pushing them to overtime before the Coyotes managed a narrow 24-17 win. This time, USD will look to build on their momentum from the opening game, free from the nerves that accompany a first outing.
USD head coach Matt Vitzthum expressed his relief at moving past the initial jitters, stating, "I’m very relieved and excited to get into a rhythm and a routine of what it’s going to be like every single week." This sentiment reflects the team's readiness to focus on performance rather than individual milestones.
While Modrzewski's six touchdown passes were undoubtedly a highlight, the Coyotes' offensive depth was equally noteworthy. Five different receivers caught touchdown passes, showcasing the versatility of the offense under second-year offensive coordinator Tim Morrison. Brayden White, in his first career start, caught two touchdown passes, while Keyondray Jones-Logan returned to the field after missing the previous season, recording over 100 yards in his comeback game.
USD's offensive line, featuring five new starters, also played a crucial role in the victory. Redshirt freshman Lucas Feldkamp, who started at center, was particularly praised for his performance. Vitzthum noted the importance of a solid offensive line for a young quarterback, emphasizing how it allows Modrzewski to focus on executing plays without the constant worry of defensive pressure.
Defensively, the Coyotes had their share of new faces as well, particularly in the secondary. After allowing a touchdown on CCSU's opening drive, USD's defense settled in, limiting the Blue Devils to just 115 passing yards for the game. The contributions of newcomers like Kansas State transfer Asher Tomasczewski, who recorded the team's first sack, were vital in establishing a strong defensive presence.
Special teams also made a positive impact, with kicker Bohdie Ing successfully converting all eight extra-point attempts and making a 30-yard field goal. Punter Brook Honorè Jr. averaged 46 yards on two punts, demonstrating the team's overall improvement.
As the Coyotes prepare for their matchup against Northern Colorado, they will need to build on the foundation laid in their season opener. The Bears, who narrowly lost to Weber State in their first game, will present a formidable challenge. Vitzthum emphasized the need for better execution in their offensive game plan compared to last year's struggles against Northern Colorado, where USD managed only 99 passing yards.
With a focus on improving from their previous encounters and building on the success of their opening game, the Coyotes are eager to secure their first road-opening victory since 2017. The upcoming game will be a true test of their adaptability and growth as a team.
