Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's first outing as East Zone vice-captain didn't quite go to script, with the young batter falling early in the Duleep Trophy 2026 quarter-final against North East Zone.
East Zone were sent in to bat first at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, and Sooryavanshi opened alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran.

He'd recently been named East Zone vice-captain, serving under India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan in a squad that also features veteran pacer Mohammed Shami.
It is a clear sign of how much faith selectors have placed in him at such a young age, but he failed to meet expectations with the bat.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's score today in the Duleep TrophySooryavanshi was up against right-arm medium pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam and the left-hander wasted no time showing his trademark aggression, striking two boundaries off consecutive deliveries.
The first was tucked through mid-wicket, the second punched crisply through cover.
Just as it looked like the 15-year-old was settling in nicely, Konthoujam adjusted his line and length on the final ball of the over, angling one just outside off and cramping Sooryavanshi for room. Trying to play the ball on the up through point, he only managed to find the fielder stationed at gully, which ended his stay at the crease after just six deliveries and eight runs.
Despite losing both openers early, East Zone steadied themselves nicely, reaching 110 for 2 after 23 overs in the opening session. Kumar Kushagra brought up his half-century, while Sudip Kumar Gharami offered solid support at the other end.
Exciting early battle 🔥
