The Golden State Valkyries surprised the WNBA world in their first season, making the playoffs despite an expansion roster. Things already look more promising in Year 2, where the team has already exceeded last season’s regular-season win total.
Year 3 will bring yet another surprise: The 2027 WNBA All-Star Game. The Valkyries were selected to host the event, the league revealed Tuesday. The 2027 WNBA All-Star Game will take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
In a statement, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert credited the Valkyrie and their fans for making the San Francisco Bay Area an exciting place to play.
“We are thrilled to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star to the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time. The Golden State Valkyries have brought incredible energy and excitement to the WNBA from the moment they were announced as an expansion team in 2023, and the response from fans across the Bay Area has been remarkable. Valkyries fans have embraced this team with an extraordinary level of passion and enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see that energy on full display for the entire league next summer.”
Team president Jess Smith called it an “incredible honor” to host the game in 2027.
The league already put out a schedule of events for the 2027 All-Star weekend. On July 30, the WNBA will host its Shooting Stars event and 3-point contest. Those will air at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The 2027 All-Star Game will take place Saturday, July 31, and will air on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Given that the Valkyries are still in their infancy as a franchise, it will mark the first time the WNBA has hosted an All-Star Game in California, let alone the Bay Area. Like other professional sports leagues, the WNBA moves the All-Star Game to a new site each year. In recent seasons, the league has leaned on some familiar places, with either Las Vegas or Chicago hosting the event in five of the last seven seasons.
With the Valkyries now an integral part of the league, the WNBA will explore new ground in 2027.
