The Virginia Tech Hokies are exactly two weeks away from opening the 2026 college football season when the VMI Keydets travel down I-81 to Blacksburg. It will be the first game for head coach James Franklin with the Hokies.
It will also be the first game for several Hokies, including projected starting quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer. Speaking of Grunkemeyer, Virginia Tech named its team captains on Saturday for the upcoming season. He was one of the Hokies’ six captains.
Grunkemeyer, a 6-foot-2, 213-pound redshirt sophomore quarterback from Lewis Center, Ohio, started the second half of last season for Penn State and immediately took on a leadership role after arriving in Blacksburg.
Here are all six of Virginia Tech’s 2026 captains:
- QB Ethan Grunkemeyer: 6-foot-2, 213, RS SO, Lewis Center, Ohio
- TE Benji Gosnell: 6-foot-4, 252, RS SR, Pilot Mountain, N.C.
- LB Kaleb Spencer: 6-foot-1, 230, SR, Gloucester, Va.
- LB George Ballance: 5-foot-11, 230, JR, Virginia Beach, Va.
- S Tyson Flowers: 5-foot-11, 204, RS SR, Fort Worth, Texas
- K John Love: 5-foot-11, 181, RS SR, Spartanburg, S.C.
