As the high school sports season heats up, the Cellcom Press-Gazette is calling on fans to participate in selecting the athlete of the week. Voting is open until 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, and anyone can cast their vote, regardless of subscription status.
Last week's winner was Traevaughn Weaver, a running back from Green Bay Southwest, who garnered an impressive 11,062 votes. Weaver's performance not only secured him the title but also made him the third athlete from Southwest to achieve this honor, joining the ranks of golf standout Emma Cunningham and softball player Elizabeth Boughton. Tyler Cleven from Green Bay Preble was the runner-up with 5,701 votes, showcasing the competitive spirit among local athletes.
This week, several nominees have emerged, each with remarkable achievements that have set them apart. Diesel Bosdeck, a junior quarterback and defensive back for Kewaunee football, played a pivotal role in his team's 17-6 victory over Luxemburg-Casco. Bosdeck showcased his dual-threat capabilities by completing 13 of 20 passes for 94 yards and rushing 15 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he contributed significantly with nine total tackles and a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown, highlighting his all-around talent.
Kiley Dhein, an outside hitter for NEW Lutheran volleyball, has also made headlines by helping her team secure a 4-1 record at the Laconia Tournament. Dhein's performance included 30 kills, 14 aces, and 53 digs, marking a milestone as she recorded the 1,000th dig of her career during the tournament. Earlier in the week, she also led her team at the SPASH Invitational, finishing with 15 kills and 28 digs, establishing herself as a key player early in the season.
Max Goebel, a senior wide receiver and defensive back from De Pere football, had an impressive outing in a 38-19 victory over Fond du Lac. He caught five passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns, reaching the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive week. Additionally, Goebel made a significant defensive contribution with a 26-yard pick-six, bringing his season totals to 14 receptions for 207 yards and three touchdowns.
Elvin Mendoza, a senior soccer player for Luxemburg-Casco, has made a strong start to the season, leading his team to two wins. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Kaukauna and followed up with a hat trick in a 3-1 win over Seymour, showcasing his scoring prowess.
Lastly, Hadley Stenavich, a sophomore right-side hitter for Green Bay Notre Dame volleyball, has been instrumental in her team's success, contributing 33 total kills and averaging 5.5 kills per set while hitting an impressive .577. Her efforts helped the Tritons achieve a perfect 3-0 record at the Notre Dame Quadrangular, defeating teams like New London and Menasha decisively.
With such outstanding performances on display, fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite athlete in this week's poll. The results will not only honor individual achievements but also highlight the vibrant high school sports community in the area.
