VOTE for the Herald-Times Athlete of the Week for Aug. 17-22

Welcome to the Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll, our first of the fall season.

Congratulations to our preseason athlete of the year winners: North girls soccer player Haeli Chambre (56.4%) over South's Maddie Norman (25.5%), North boys soccer player Liam Conlin (53.2%) over Eastern Greene's Griff Hengeveld (37.%) and in football, Edgewood quarterback Braylon Linerode (43.7%, 26,592 votes) over Bloomington South receiver/cornerback Jonathan Winstead (40.3%, 24.513).

Readers may vote as much as they like for their favorite stars, just remember to refresh the page after each time voting, until the poll closes on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 11:59 p.m.

Here are this week's nominees:

Brady Adams, South football

Leader of a defense that kept North off the scoreboard until the last two minutes, recording nine tackles (five solo), one quarterback pressure, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in a 44-6 win.

Addy Applegate, Owen Valley volleyball

Setter had 66 assists, 10 aces, four kills and 30 digs as the Patriots topped Monrovia 25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12 and fell to Cascade 15-25, 25-13, 29-27, 25-11.

Everly Clark, South volleyball

Had a big week in helping the Panthers open the season 6-0, collecting 28 kills while hitting .412 vs. Edgewood; .318 vs. Linton and .304 vs. Evansville Memorial. Also had nine aces and 30 digs.

Hayden Clark, South football

First start of his senior year at running back was a solid one, rushing 16 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-6 win over North.

Penny Eads, North girls cross country

Ran to second place at the Brown County Harrier Invitational in 20:28.2 to lead the Cougars to third place as a team.

Boaz Ewer, Seven Oaks cross country

Sophomore won the Firehawks' first two meets, running a 1:55.56 at the Eminence Invite and going 18:02 at the Eastern Greene Invite. Settled for second at the Bloomfield Cardinal Inviational in 18:24.

Caroline Farmer, North girls soccer

Had seven goals, including two hat tricks as the Cougars took down Perry Meridian (4-0) and Seymour (4-1) and lost to Franklin (5-1) to start the year.

Jake Heidrick, Owen Valley football

Ran the ball just seven times but gained 120 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 64-0 rout of Brown County. All had 77 yards on punt returns.

William LaGrange, Owen Valley football

A standout on both sides of the ball in the Patriots 64-0 whipping of Brown County. On offense, ran four times for 92 yards and a TD. Defensively, led the team with 13 tackles, five for loss.

Eli Lirot, Edgewood football

Junior running back nearly matched his season total yardage from last year (112), rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown in a 29-8 win over Springs Valley.

Manoela Daia Lopes, Edgewood girls soccer

Had four goals as the Mustangs rallied to beat Brown County, 6-4.

Maddie McDaniel, Seven Oaks volleyball

Junior had eight kills in an efficient day against Central Christian Academy and was solid on the attack and blocking for the Firehawks.   

Luke McNeal, Eastern Greene football

Had a big game on both sides of the ball in a 41-12 win over Pike Central with four catches for 119 yards and three TDs and had seven tackles and forced a fumble on defense.

Will Morrison, Seven Oaks boys soccer

Sophomore scored the game tying goal in what would be a 2-1 win over Mooresville Christian to begin Tri-Rivers Conference play. Then had two more goals in the Firehawks 6-0 win at Central Christian.  

Landon Norris, Eastern Greene football

Was everywhere on defense in a 41-12 win over Pike Central, which scored just once against the T-Birds defense, with 15 tackles including a team best 11 solos.

Jackson Walker, North boys cross country

Ran a 16:08.0 to take third and lead North to a fourth place finish at the Brown County Harrier Invitational.

Dylan Wickens, Edgewood football

Led the Mustangs' defensive effort in a 29-8 win over Springs Valley with 10 tackles (eight solos), two passes defended and sealed the win with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.
