The Golden State Warriors can’t be happy to see Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Giannis Antetokounmpo all team up on the Miami Heat.

Warriors insider Sam Esfandiari feels that Governor Joe Lacob must be “livid” that the three former NBA champions have linked up in South Beach, when they could have all been a part of the Warriors in an alternative reality.

“Joe has gotta be livid seeing Klay/Wiggins/Giannis in south beach together 🤣,” Esfandiari wrote on X after news broke of Thompson signing a two-year, $13M deal to sign with the Heat after completing a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.

Warriors Plans Go Awry

As was widely documented, the Warriors pursued a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade for years, but failed to emerge as one of the finalists for “The Greek Freak” this summer, despite boasting of up to four tradeable first-round picks. They similarly had intentions to reunite with Thompson, who himself welcomed the idea of returning to the Bay Area franchise after leaving as a free agent in 2024.

As for Wiggins, the likes of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr have continued to shower praise on the 2022 NBA champion, calling him one of the best teammates they’ve ever had. Many analysts suspected that Wiggins could eventually return to Golden State to play out the final few years of his career.

For now, it appears the Warriors will have to play spectators as three players who could have been on their roster compete for an NBA championship in the other conference.

Klay Thompson Signs with Heat

At the Fanatics Fest in July, Thompson said “never say never” when asked about a reunion with the Warriors. He took it a step further by stating he wouldn’t mind playing out the final year of his contract with the Warriors if the Mavericks trade him.

“Shoot, I don’t know. I’ve got one year left on my deal. It would be nice to end it in Golden State,” Thompson said last month.

However, Thompson ultimately preferred to sign with the Heat, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, after being courted by Antetokounmpo and the Heat front office. The Los Angeles Lakers also reportedly pursued Thompson.

“The Heat made Thompson their top target after pulling off the blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo,” MacMahon reported on Friday.

Mavericks front-office boss Masai Ujiri wished Thompson the best in his quest to pursue a fifth NBA championship.

“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization,” Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement.

“We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
