The Panthers have to be at least a little tired of Jacksonville. The team has been there since Tuesday and held a joint practice with the Jaguars the following day. They’ll be wheels up shortly after tonight’s game goes final.
‘Something special’Wednesday’s workout also offered a sneak peek at what training camp could look like next season for the Panthers. The Jaguars’ practice facility, which opened in 2023, features an indoor field with two outdoor fields next to it. That setup allowed the team to warm up inside and put in work outside.
“You hear the crowd, noise, when something positive happens for the Jags,” Panthers head coach Dave Conales said. “For us, we make a big play, it was kind of quiet. That’s what it’s like being on the road. Kind of cool, and I remember it being that way during our training camp, so hopefully we can get our situation set up, get people back out there to bring that energy because it really brought out something special in the guys.”
‘Consistency’During training, things probably got a little strange for Panthers linebacker Devin Lloyd, who spent his entire NFL career with Jacksonville before joining Carolina.
This week, though, he walked straight into the visitors’ locker room.
Lloyd said it was nostalgic to return and see his former teammates, but he’s a Panther now.
Lloyd is wearing the green dot on defense, meaning he’s in communication with the defensive coordinator and responsible for getting everyone lined up and organized.
So far, he’s been as good as advertised.
Lloyd recorded three tackles in just 13 snaps during last week’s preseason game against Buffalo.
He’s already set a high standard for this defense, which he says has even more talent than the group he faced a year ago.
“I don’t know what it was like, per se, that team last year,” Lloyd said. “I know they talked about just consistency: one game not playing up to their standard, one game playing great now. Being with these guys in this locker room, you can definitely see the talent (we are) upholding that standard every day, harping on being consistent, coming out and giving great effort every day.”
‘Super proud’Quarterback Bryce Young is proving to be an early leader again this preseason.
His team got good work in and stayed healthy at the joint practice.
“Slow start, but I was super proud of how the guys settled in,” Bryce said. “I think that for us, it’s just being able to refocus knowing it’s not the end of the world, but we have to have that sense of urgency, try to relay that to the guys, as well as doing that amongst themselves, and once we settled in we did some good stuff.”
