Josh Dobbs’ afternoon started about as badly as possible Saturday against the Washington Commanders.
Then he reminded everyone why his legs have always made him dangerous.
After committing two early turnovers, Dobbs kept the ball on a zone-read play, found open space and raced 50 yards for a Detroit Lions touchdown at Ford Field. Wide receiver Tay Martin delivered a key block downfield, helping spring Dobbs for the explosive score.
The touchdown provided a much-needed response from Dobbs after a brutal opening stretch. Former Lions cornerback Amik Robertson strip-sacked him on Detroit’s second offensive play, with Washington recovering the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Dobbs later threw an interception as Detroit’s offense continued to sputter.
The 50-yard run didn’t erase those mistakes, but it showed exactly what Dobbs can bring to Detroit’s backup quarterback competition: the ability to create something when the designed play breaks down.
Detroit signed Dobbs earlier this month after Teddy Bridgewater retired. Dan Campbell gave Dobbs the start Saturday, with rookie Luke Altmyer also scheduled for significant work as the Lions evaluate the position behind Jared Goff. Detroit’s quarterback plan called for the two backups to receive roughly equal opportunities against Washington.
Don’t Miss What Tay Martin DidDobbs will get the highlight. Martin’s block may matter more to his own future.
Detroit signed Martin in June, and he has steadily pushed himself into the conversation for one of the final receiver spots.
For a player battling near the bottom of the depth chart, Saturday’s block is exactly the kind of play coaches notice. Martin didn’t need the football to affect the game. He recognized the developing run, found his assignment and helped turn a good gain into a touchdown.
That is especially valuable for a backup receiver who will need to contribute on special teams and do the dirty work when he’s not getting targets.
Dobbs needed something positive after his rough beginning.
Martin helped him get it, and both players gave Detroit’s coaches something else to evaluate when the film goes on.
