OKC Thunder legend Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from basketball Aug. 12 via a three-minute video narrated by Oscar-winning actor Michael B. Jordan.
The video, titled "Museum of Unspoken Answers," begins with Westbrook's start, before his iconic triple-doubles or award collection that included an NBA Most Valuable Player title in 2017. Nine years earlier, the Seattle Supersonics selected the Long Beach, California, native as the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft. That same year, the franchise moved to Oklahoma City.
"No one in OKC could've told you what he'd become," Jordan said in the narration.
Westbrook became more than just a player, but also a personality off the court, "a meme before we even called it that," as Jordan said in the video.
His personal life motto, "Why Not?," was repeated multiple times through the announcement. Westbrook adopted the mindset early in his life to remind himself to never let fear stop him from following opportunities. He now runs the Why Not? Foundation, supporting community programs, youth education and wellness initiatives
After stepping down from basketball, Westbrook will remain involved in growing his community, which includes projects in Oklahoma City like the city's new soccer stadium.
The video concludes in silence, just words in a black screen.
"The greatest thing he left behind couldn't fit inside a museum," it reads. "It never had to be said."
