Weekly Palace News Round Up - Monday 24th August

The Premier League returned last week, with Crystal Palace fans pleased to have their first chance to see Pierre Sage’s system in action in the top flight. While the result against Everton was disappointing, with a 2-0 defeat despite appearing stronger in the first half, it was not a disheartening effort with promising signs from the system. The match saw new signings Dwight McNeil, Anan Khalili and Takehiro Tomiyasu make their Premier League debut for the club.

Fans main concern following the defeat was the condition of centre-back Chadi Riad after he was stretchered off in the second half. The Moroccan international suffered a serious knee injury, where his knee cap appeared to significantly move out of place which could indicate a ACL or MCL injury. This would be heartbreaking for the youngster, who has only begun to enjoy his time starting for the Eagles following his previous long term injury.

The bigger news from the weekend came with the updates on the status of some of Palace’s big name players. It was revealed in the morning before the Everton match that Ismaila Sarr did not travel to Merseyside despite Sage saying he was fit to play in the press conference two days prior. Sarr was reported to have a knock which Sage confirmed in the post match conference. However rumours are circulating that Sarr is pushing for a move, after he has agreed personal terms with the Turkish side Galatasarary. 

Coming out after the game was the news that Jean-Philipe Mateta has been pursuing action against Palace claiming that the last season on his contract should be considered “invalid”. Mateta’s contract expires next summer, as the club previously triggered an option for an additional year. Mateta took this to an Independent Premier League tribunal last season, but is now taking the matter to FIFA. 

Axel Disasi still remains set to join Palace on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Disasi has had close links to Palace throughout the summer transfer window, and brings with him strong experience for Palace’s squad depth. However many fans feel he is not an adequate Lacroix replacement, and with Riad’s injury looking like a serious set back, Palace may need to spend big to secure a centre-back worthy of bringing some leadership and stability to the back line. 

Daniel Munoz’s potential departure still remains on the cards, with speculation flying following Saturday's game with images of him waving to Everton fans and hugging David Moyes.
