In a decisive matchup on September 3, Wellington High School's football team delivered a commanding performance against Fort Pierce Westwood Academy, winning 26-0 at Calvin R. Triplett Field at Lawnwood Stadium. This victory not only improved Wellington's record to 3-0 but also marked their first shutout since 2024, a significant milestone for the Wolverines as they aim for a successful season.
The game began with both teams showing strong defensive efforts, particularly from Westwood, who managed to hold Wellington in check for the first portion of the contest. However, the Wolverines capitalized on a short punt that set them up on the Westwood 29-yard line. Sophomore running back Jay’lan Tyler quickly made his mark by scoring on a 29-yard run, giving Wellington an early lead.
As the game progressed, the Wolverines continued to assert their dominance. After a series of defensive plays, including two sacks of Westwood's sophomore quarterback Elize Pierre, Wellington found themselves in a favorable position again. Junior kicker Evan Holowecky capped off a drive with a 41-yard field goal just before halftime, extending the lead to 10-0.
Westwood's head coach LaDaris Vann acknowledged the slow start of his team, which has been a recurring issue. “If we start slow, it’s going to catch up with us,” he remarked after the game. Unfortunately for the Panthers, this trend continued into the second half. Holowecky added another field goal early in the fourth quarter, and shortly after, junior Rhys Lewis returned an interception for a 52-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 20-0.
In a swift turn of events, Westwood fumbled the ensuing kickoff, allowing Wellington's junior Elijah Thomas to score from two yards out just 19 seconds later. This sequence of plays highlighted Westwood's struggles, as they were unable to recover from the momentum shift, ultimately falling to 2-1 on the season.
Despite the loss, Westwood's defense showed flashes of brilliance, particularly with senior Jakeim Ellison recording two interceptions and contributing to multiple pass breakups. However, the Panthers' offense struggled significantly, managing only 10 yards rushing and failing to score, marking their first shutout since a playoff loss last season.
Looking ahead, Westwood will face a challenging schedule, hitting the road for their next four games. Coach Vann expressed hope that the change of scenery might refocus his players, as they prepare to visit Palm Bay Heritage High, among other opponents. “It might get the focus back on the situation at hand,” he said.
On the other side, Wellington's victory is a promising sign for a team that finished 3-7 last season. The Wolverines demonstrated resilience, overcoming mistakes such as fumbles and still managing to gain 145 rushing yards, with Tyler leading the charge. Holowecky’s performance as a kicker further solidified his value to the team, as he not only scored points but also contributed significantly on kickoffs and punting.
With this shutout victory, Wellington is looking to build on their success and aim for their first winning season since 2022, when they finished with a 6-5 record. As the season progresses, both teams will need to address their respective challenges to improve their standings in the competitive landscape of high school football.
