West Ham Eye £22m Exit For Frozen-Out Defender As Villa Interested: Should Hammers Let Him Leave?

According to journalist Jacob Tanswell, Aston Villa are in serious discussions to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from West Ham United. Villa’s interest intensified after a deal for Club Brugge’s Joel Ordoñez collapsed, with concerns over the Belgian’s fitness and recovery timeline leading the club to walk away entirely.

A separate approach for Southampton‘s Taylor Harwood-Bellis also stalled, with the two clubs unable to close the gap on valuation. Todibo has emerged as the alternative Villa’s technical director has reached, and talks are now active.

The situation at the London Stadium is a mess. Todibo put in 23 Premier League appearances last season, 1,818 minutes, returned zero goals and one assist, and then flatly refused to play in West Ham’s final game of the season against Leeds United. That’s not a player falling out of favour.

That’s a complete and irreparable breakdown, and it happened in public. Nuno Espírito Santo hauled him off in the 26th minute against Newcastle during a touchline argument that genuinely shattered any working relationship the two had left.

West Ham are now a Championship club. Keeping a high-earning, top-flight centre-back with documented disciplinary issues under multiple managers, Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter both had run-ins with him, would poison the environment Nuno is trying to build.

The evidence is right there: a 4-1 dismantling of Southampton in the Carabao Cup using seven players aged 20 or under. Nuno doesn’t need Todibo. He needs hunger and structure, not a €22.2 million asset who’s frozen out and running down the clock.

The financial case is equally cold. Todibo’s market value has dropped sharply from £36.3 million. Getting his wages completely off the books before the September 1st deadline matters far more than squeezing out a minor profit on the transfer fee.

West Ham should demand a guaranteed £25 million permanent fee plus a 15% sell-on clause. Villa’s position is weak, with Ezri Konsa already gone to Arsenal and their defensive options exhausted. That’s real leverage, and West Ham would be foolish not to use it. The funds free up room to sign a physical, Championship-suited defensive anchor. West Ham need to close this deal within 48 hours.
