Boy, how the prospects of the Milwaukee Brewers have changed quickly.
Not only will the Brewers open a four-game series against the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, Aug. 13 at Dodger Stadium in a battle to earn back the best record in baseball, they’ll also be attempting to stay in first place in the National League and its Central Division.
When the Brewers left Milwaukee for their seven-game trip to the West Coast, they held a 2½-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the best record in baseball, a three-game edge over the Atlanta Braves for the best NL record and a 5½-game advantage over the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead.
After a disheartening sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres, the Brewers trail the Rays by a half-game, hold a one-game lead over the Braves and Dodgers in the NL and lead the hated Cubs by only three games entering the important four-game series.

The highlight of the matchup against the Dodgers is when the Brewers face Tarik Skubal in the series finale Sunday, Aug. 16.
The Brewers lost out in their quest to acquire Skubal at the trade deadline when the Detroit Tigers picked the Dodgers' package.
Of course, getting Skubal would have meant little for the Brewers if their offense continues to struggle. They've scored more than four runs in a game just twice in August.
At the heart of the offensive woes are Christian Yelich, who’s hitting .185 the last two calendar months; William Contreras, who’s batting just .172 since the beginning of July; and Garrett Mitchell, who’s in the throes of a 7-for-64 skid since lighting the world on fire in July.
