Fulham’s 2026/27 season continues with a vengeance as the Cottagers prepare for their first trip away from London to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Alvaro Arbeloa, fresh from a 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup is looking to get both his first away win and his first Premier League win under his belt at the same time.
The Cottagers were beaten 3-2 by Chelsea on Monday night in their Premier League opener and will hope they can reverse that and get their first points on the board.
Sunderland themselves fell to a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich on the opening day and so the battle is one between two winless teams.
Neither side will want to join Tottenham and Coventry in that category and so this is a match of huge importance for both teams.
But, as we look ahead to Sunday’s game, what happened the last time Fulham made the trip to the Stadium of Light?
Unlike this season, where it is a summery affair that sees the Cottagers heading north, last year, Fulham met the Black Cats in the depths of winter - on February 22, to be precise.
It was not a game that kicked into life early on, with very little action taking place inside the opening 45 minutes.
But, in the second half, both sides came alive.
Raul Jimenez headed in a cross to put Fulham into a 1-0 lead and he was at it again seven minutes later when he scored from the penalty spot.
Enzo Le Fee scored his own penalty after 75 minutes to give Sunderland a hope, but it was not to be as Alex Iwobi scored 10 minutes later to give Fulham an unassailable lead.
Marco Silva’s men became only the second team to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, at the time but bizarrely that was the last time Fulham were to win on the road all season.
Now, the Cottagers have a very clear game to look back on fondly and attempt to emulate.
If they can do that, Alvaro Arbeloa will be a happy man indeed.
