When will Russell Westbrook be eligible for Basketball Hall of Fame?

After building a legendary career, Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday. He called it quits after 18 seasons. One of the era-defining names of the 2010s, he's one of the most dynamic and erratic NBA superstars ever.

Westbrook enjoyed his best years with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He spent the first 11 seasons of his career there. During that time, he ascended to become an NBA superstar. He was the 2016-17 MVP winner, nine-time All-Star and a nine-time All-NBA member. Not just that, but he co-starred — alongside Kevin Durant — in their first title contender.

Durant and Westbrook kept the Thunder in the title conversation for eight years. They had one NBA Finals trip and four Western Conference Finals appearances. The superstar duo is one of the reasons why OKC has been one of the winningest teams since its 2008 relocation.

Even with Westbrook's final one-third of his career petering out as a role player, his time on the Thunder alone warrants a spot in basketball immortality. He completely redefined what a triple-double meant. As of now, he's the OKC franchise leader for career points and assists. He is also the all-time leader in career triple-doubles.

It's a no-brainer that Westbrook will get his No. 0 retired by the Thunder. Maybe he'll get a statue built, too. But what about the prestigious Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame? It won't take as long as you might think.

Westbrook will be eligible to qualify for the 2029 Hall of Fame class. And considering his stacked resume, he should make it pretty easily as a first-ballot case. Finalists must receive at least 18 out of 24 votes from a secret panel of basketball voters. Selected classes are usually announced during the NCAA Final Four and formally inducted in a summer ceremony in Springfield, MA.

Think Westbrook should get in pretty seamlessly. When he is inducted, he'll do so with all of his career highlights stemming from his time on the Thunder from 2008-19. He's one of the three greatest and best OKC players in franchise history. And it's going to take a while to drop off that range.
