White Sox, Mets fans have massive brawl in Chicago

The Chicago White Sox were able to capture a victory over the New York Mets on Sunday in a series finale. With each victory, the dream of the postseason is becoming more of a reality for the Pale Hose. As we creep toward September, Chicago holds a 3.5-game lead atop the American League Central. This qualifies as a significant surprise as not all that much was expected this season—even for the most optimistic White Sox fan.

So that’s what’s going on between the white lines. Action has also been taking place in the stands as the organization’s supporters have now been involved in two pretty gnarly brawls in a single week.

On Monday night the makeshift ring was at Wrigley Field as tensions boiled over during a clash with the hated crosstown Cubs. Six days later the battleground shifted to the South Side as White Sox fans turned the upper deck behind home plate in a Thunderdome.

As far as stadium melees go, this one was pretty intense. It’s rare to see that many bodies spilling over so many rows of seats. Or last that long.

It’s always a dangerous game to try to armchair quarterback the situation after it spins out of control. Yet time after time when one of these scenes emerges the curiosity grows. What possible chain of events had to have occurred for all of these people to transform a nice little Sunday at the ballpark to a brawl that is now all over the internet? How many chances at de-escalation were not taken to end up like this? The mind reels because there really is no logical explanation.

Yet since the beginning of time fans have been fighting at the ballpark. Sure, not usually flirting with falling out of the upper deck, but the point remains.

It will be interesting to see if White Sox fans keep up what’s becoming an impressive pace of brawls.
